Grade KG Library Guide, PXES: Back to School

A guide to library materials and lesson outlines that support KG curriculum at Shanghai American School, Puxi Campus.

Back to School

Use early in the year to introduce a wide variety of texts.  Pay special attention to the illustrations.  "Fat books" shows a fat monkey.  "Scary stories" shows a ghost hovering behind the monkey.  Very clever, and the kids pick up on these visual cues.

Have a stack of books nearby that parallel books highlighted in the story.  For example, show a ghost story, pirate story, monster book, and counting book.  As the kids show interest, pass them out to get the group reading right away!  I like to use an alphabet book to take them through the ABCs so that they can show me what they know.

Complement to Word of the Week, "Hello."  Extend with stories and texts about animals and the natural world.

Use the three "Box Books" as a project for creating reading boxes to add to classroom reading corners.  At the beginning of the year, there are always a lot of shipping boxes from the annual book order.  So, a box project is perfect for back to school.
